iTeam members serve our school community in several ways. Some members primarily collaborate with teachers and other iTeam members to support Technology Assistance Projects. Other members choose to primarily help the Tech Department Staff to support technology use and maintenance in our school community. The demand for services changes depending on several factors. iTeam members help staff to cope with the larger number of students and teachers who come for service after weekends and vacations. iTeam members can help the most if they are available to assist on demand but work on iTeam projects:

We NEED to fix the high schools system for laptops. They are using a lot of paper, and they are wasting there time byfilinga ton of papers. Ithinkthat we could try using GoogleDocs to fix this problem but it NEEDS to be fixed ASAP.
We also need to move this website to Google because Wetpaint has decided to charge for the use of this website. Google has promised to keep there websites free for schoolusage.
If students are waiting in line for help, offer to help
If Mr. Kramer or Ms. Wright, are free, ask them if they have tasks

Detailed Descriptions:

Ambassador Actors Project Background:
The Ambassador Actors Project is an award-winning drama project conducted as an extra-curricular activity for students in the Maine School Administrative District 75 (MSAD75). A grant from the Teaching Tolerance Project supported the training of the initial group of actors. Ambassador Actors meet after school and use drama to explore sensitive social issues including bullying and diversity. Founding members of the project learned from a national leader of the concept and have subsequently recruited additional participants. When the project won the 2008 Excellence in Coordinated School Health, Youth, Family and Community Involvment Award, several people came (including some from the Maine Department of Education) to observe the Actors in Topsham. They found the observations of the process to be valuable and wanted to be able to share it with others.

iTeams and Ambassador Actors Collaboration:
Peter Spears, the Health Education Consultant, of the Maine Department of Education requested that Ms. Shaw provide a brief documentary video of the Ambassador Actors in action to interested people in Augusta and around the State. She sent an email message to Ms. Wright in the MAM Computer Lab requesting assistance with videography at a session after school the following day. Ms. Wright had a previous commitment and thought that one or more iTeam members might be able to help. She forwarded the request to Mr. Spaeth, the iTeams advisor. He agreed that the request might make a reasonable iTeam Project. At a regularly scheduled iTeam meeting, Mr. Spaeth asked if anyone were interested and available in helping with this project. Several members wanted to help but Ian was the only one able to make the AAP meeting on such short notice.

Ms. Shaw borrowed the camera and tripod from the Middle School Library. After Ian completed his previous after-school commitments, he and Mr. Spaeth met Ms. Shaw and the Ambassador Actors in the open lobby of the Orion Center. In 15 minutes, Ms. Shaw explained the context of the project, and provided directorial guidelines, "Use your best judgement of shots to capture the process." In another ten minutes, Ian figured out how to operate a camera he had never used before, explained to Ms. Shaw how to use the equipment, and setup to shoot. He recorded until it was time to packup equipment and catch the late bus home. Just before leaving, Ian offered to come again to help shoot and offered to help edit and produce the documentary.

Ms. Shaw brought the camera and tape to the media center the next day and asked for Mr. Kramer's help in transferring the recording from digital tape to the one of the workstations in the media center. When she saw the raw material, she expressed enthusiasm for Ian's selection of shots. She also told Mr. Spaeth that she was excited to take Ian up on his offer to help edit the video.

When Ian arrived for an iTeam meeting the next day, Mr. Spaeth conveyed Ms. Shaw's interest in expanding the project to include editing and production and gave Ian access to the raw video that he had shot the day before. Since Ms. Shaw had not yet given additional editorial guidance, Ian mocked up a simple demonstration of the features that he could incorporate into the documentary, e. g. titles, transitions, and credits. He primarily wanted to help Ms. Shaw understand the range of editorial options. Since he worked quickly to illustrate the broadest range of choices, he did not attend to details such as spelling in the titles. He knew that those changes were as easy to make as editing a word-processing document. Just before returning to his next class, Ian suggested that he might be able to stay after school to work with Ms. Shaw on editing.

When Ms. Shaw stopped in the Media Center, Mr. Spaeth briefly described the progress that he had seen and mentioned Ian's suggestion that he might be able to stay after school. Ms. Shaw knew that she had a deadline to deliver the finished video in a couple of weeks so she welcomed the opportunity to come after school. When Ms. Shaw arrived after school, as she waited for Ian, she inspected the work that he had done earlier in the day. While she was excited to see that he had worked on the project, she expressed concern over three issues with his draft. First, Ian had misspelled words in the opening title. Second, he had not cut sequences that included adult participants. And third, he wasn't there to help make the changes she wanted to incorporate. Since she expressed some urgency in completing the project, Mr. Spaeth tried unsuccessfully to help her make some revisions. Unfortunately, Ian subsequently recalled that he had a previous commitment and did not come. Ms. Shaw wondered whether she might need to find someone else to help her produce the documentary. She created a "cut list" to help with the editing and suggested a deadline that would give her time to find an alternative source of assistance.

When Ian returned to the lab the next day and learned of the misunderstanding about scheduling, he restated his commitment to the project and quickly set about making the necessary revisions. Since Ms. Shaw's listed her cuts in different units than iMovie uses, he devised a clever method to use the editing tools in iMovie to produce the results that Ms. Shaw desired. With that innovation, he was able to finish the rough editing and then met with Ms. Shaw for co-editing.

Mesh Nets

MSAD 75 and Communities Network

Brief Description:

The MSAD 75 District maintains mesh networks at several schools in the district. Kerry Gallivan, the District Technology Director, proposed the idea to extend those networks out into the community to provide access. When iTeam members heard of the potential in a meeting, they got so excited that we discuss it at nearly every opportunity.

Look at a Google Map of the primary nodes and sub-nodes of a potential MSAD 75 & Communities Concept MeshNet. The schools currently have wireless intended for use in school. This project helps us think about what we can do to extend learning outside of our schools. The icons come from the standard set of icons provided in the Google Maps interface.

The Mesh Nets presentation at Scribd provides background information that may help to establish context for this project. It is more complex an introduction than is typical for middle school student but it is a start and lots of images. It also emphasizes that concepts are still under development and research continues.

Here are the views stats for the MeshNet Map that I created. On Friday afternoon (3/27), I checked and mentally noted that it had 36 views and this morning Monday (3/30), it shows 72 views. Note that the map is unlisted. Since its url is encoded with a 10 digit alpha-numeric string, it is nearly impossible for people to find it by accident. I interpret that to mean that those of us who know the url are sending it to others who are either interested enough to return to study the map or are inviting others to view the map, too.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that the embed code for this map allowed it to be displayed in our wiki. I have tried several other widget sources and been disappointed by several. Even other Google embed codes have not worked.

2009-4-4: Jacob, and Eric and Derrick came into the Media Center for an iTeam work session on Thursday morning. Derrick and Jacob came in deeply engaged in a conversation about mesh nets that must have started in the hall. They quickly fired up the Teamboard workstation and searched for Pinkham Point Road using Google Maps. They tried to find a way to route mesh net traces over water to get the most efficient coverage of Harpswell. They slid the Google Map back and forth across the Teamboard as if it were a magic carpet. Jacob calibrated his thumb to pinky distance to the map scale and estimated the distances they projected and compared them with the specs published for various devices on the Meraki site. They spontaneously applied ideas of measurement and scale, geometry, and topography to help them solve their real problem. I get excited to see this kind of engagement with Stem fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). They will be please to know that the segment drawing tool in the online mapping programs make it easier and more accurate to measure distances.

They engaged so fully in their discussion that they did not notice that Eric sat at the workstation not engaged in the discussion. I knew that Eric had not been part of the earlier discussions but that he would be interested if he knew the context. So, I called a time-out and asked Derrick and Jacob to pause briefly to help Eric learn enough about the problem so that he, too, could participate. Once they filled him in, he joined in the discussions. I thought about trying to capture the intensity of the debate on video but thought that it might disturb the focus. When we reached the time for the scheduled motor break, I decided to walk with them and bring the GPS and iTouch so that we could experiment with them and continue the conversation while walking. Brandon demonstrated that he was able to use live maps on the iTouch when he had wireless coverage in the parking lot across Republic Avenue. My written description only partly captures the intensity of our collective interest in solving this real-world problem.

Interesting that you invite independent review here. I can comment on the general strategy to mash up web 2.0 applications-- it seems like a pragmatic and (if you find the right tools) functional strategy.

Posting your self-assessment criteria is also interesting as a strategy. I'll try to apply it to your choice: Specific, Manageable, Attainable in a Reasonable timeframe. What is missing would be some measure of degree, which would take more conversation. At WSU we have been exploring embedding surveys into sites as a way of "harvesting" assessments. It gives a bit more control over the assessment instrument.

With the ever growing number of tools (applications, devices, ... ) that can be used to support learning, iTeams can provide a service to our learning communities by exploring, prototyping and evaluating them for learning. iTeam members may use some technologies that are not currently used in other parts of the school (e. g. mobile phones, video chat, ... ). iTeam members need to be responsible about distinguishing their roles as students and iTeam members. We have been exploring a Wetpaint Wiki to develop and document iTeams' work. Ian H. created an account and drew me into a comparison with prior experience using PBWiki and Wikispaces. Wetpaint has several functions that support the pedagogy that we are trying to develop in iTeams (that others do not):

A Help Button that provides a "Get Started" Toolbar and "Welcome Tips"

Compliments (for self-, peer-, advisor-, client-assessment)
Lists of contributions for each user (process portfolios for reflective assessment)

Ian's choice of a site name did not anticipate that it would become such an important part of our development. He needed a test name and chose an acronym based on the fictional company in the animated television series Family Guy: Happy Go Lucky Toys. This artifact of our learning process exemplifies part of our learning process but makes it more difficult to find our site. We need a more appropriate url.

Wetpaint wants to support educational use of their tools so they provide ad-free wikis to teachers. I haven't yet requested the ad-free upgrade but in checking on the terms, I also noticed that they support redirects to a preferred domain name. Would it be possible for us to have an iteams url on the link75.org domain?

Diigo Notes integration

This page explores the approach that Mike Wesch described for Embedding Notes from Diigo into Wetpaint pages.

Note that the feed url that I grabbed from Diigo did not work initially. Now it seems to work but provides only the title and link in the feed. But the landing pages from these links are useful in that they have simple toggle links to the annotations (highlights and sticky notes) for each item.

So, Wesch's example page is not actually an example showing the use of this tool but of the general idea of keeping notes for a paper. I'm a little puzzled by his example page which contains no links or citations back to the sources.

Brief Description:

AppleWorks is a dead product, no longer supported by Apple, Inc., and will (probably) not be on the 2009 MLTI laptops. Many students and teachers will need to convert their AppleWorks documents to an alternative, more up-to-date format. Given the sheer quantity of files, timespread of their development, and number of file types and conversion options available, people will need assistance in:

Understanding the issue;
Culling their (sometimes decades worth of) work;
Converting files to the appropriate format;
Verifying that the conversion was done correctly; and,
Cleaning up any conversion errors that may occur.

End: Hopefully, by the end of this school year's laptop use (~ June 9th, 2009).

Detailed Descriptions:

The AppleWorks application will soon no longer be installed and/or supported, rendering AppleWorks (.cwk) documents inaccessible. Many teachers, staff, and students have created much work and will need assistance in converting it. The point is to find easy and effective tools and processes to get the job done.

AppleWorks has 5 document formats available for every .cwk file:

WP = Word Processing
SS = SpreadSheet
DR = Drawing
DB = Database
PR = Presentation

These document formats are encapsulated in a .cwk file, so by it's extension it is impossible to tell the contents of the file. The "works" application model is no longer used, instead being replaced by a "suite" of applications that effectively do the same thing:

WP ==> Pages, Word DOC, RTF, etc.
SS ==> Numbers, Excel XLS, tab-delimited, etc.
DR ==> **[complications arise with this format]**
DB ==> Bento, FileMaker, XLS, SQL, etc.**
PR ==> Keynote, PowerPoint, SlideRocket, etc.

Some applications can accept CWK files as they are and appropriately interpret them (e.g. iWork suite), while other applications (e.g. MS Office) do not automatically translate the CWK files but can accept a CWK file that has been "Saved As..." another format from AppleWorks. There are also some scripting options out there for batch conversions of files.

These options should be researched, explored, and assistive documentation authored so anyone can effectively convert their AppleWorks documents to a contemporary format.

We want various people to know about our iTeam work so that they can understand the contribution we make to our communities. We also want people to see examples so that they can help to identify, contribute and assess our work so that we can learn ways to improve it. An Open House and Project Fair provides all iTeam members with the opportunity to share their work with multiple audiences. People who attend the Project Fair get a chance to learn ways that they can help them.

Tech Support Assistance

The Maine Learning Technology Initiative (MLTI) gave large numbers of middle school students access to powerful technologies. With that opportunity came the responsibility to maintain the equipment so that students can routinely use it in and out of classes. iTeam members currently serve the school community by helping Computer Lab staff with tier-one tech support (e. g. power supply, battery, and trackpad checking), and logistics support (materials management, ...). Middle school students easily learn to provide valuable complementary services to paid staff (complex maintenance issues and admin access) and community volunteers (entering service records into the database, ...).

With the recent decision to fully expand the MLTI program to students at all Maine high schools, we have the opportunity to transport / convey valuable experience and capacity from middle schools to high schools. MSAD 75 iTeams have been using a Wetpaint wiki to collaboratively develop, track and execute projects. We are also using Google Docs for special features to support collaboration. I propose that we use these tools and share our work as publicly as we can in order to Open-Source our process so that we can model an efficient and effective extension of MLTI principles.

Wetpaint Templates Project

Detailed Descriptions:
Templates are powerful aids to support some kinds of writing activities. They help writers to know what they should consider including in their writing. They help readers to know where to look for certain types of information. The Wetpaint Template Manager makes it possible to include only the preferred templates (the published/draft switch) and to import and create appropriate templates for our contexts.

Project SMART Goals:

Mr. Spaeth will evaluate the Wetpaint template system by creating an essential template for our project-based learning: The Project Page Template. Due by Wed. 3/11/2009
Mr. Spaeth will recruit one of the iTeam project teams to describe their project using the template as a way to get student feedback on the work.
Mr. Spaeth will gather more feedback to improve the template for the full range of projects.

Saturday, March 7, 2009: Published the Project Page Template and Created this Project Page using it.
Wednesday March 11, 2009: Brandon and Jacob used the Project Page Template to describe their iTeams Wellness Project. Ian used it to describe his work on the Ambassador Actors Project. The process seemed to be intuitive and simple. One challenge was the issue of spelling in page titles. While it is possible to rename pages, that may cause links to break so spelling errors there seem to be a bigger issue than spelling that can easily be corrected in the text of wiki pages.
Friday, March 13, 2009: Tested the transfer of text from this Wetpaint wiki to cK-12 as print medium manager. Partial success: Look at the Wetpaint Templates Project Page in the cK-12 viewer.

Technology Assistance Projects

GenYES has developed and demonstrated the effectiveness of a practice they call Technology Assistance Projects.

Students work with teachers to design technology-infused lessons and provide tech support. The resulting collaboration provides the students with project-based learning and the teachers with on-site, sustainable technology integration support.
